Humorist Dave Barry comes to Book Passage on Saturday to read from his latest book, Insane City.

MONDAY (2/4)

Darren Shan, “Zom-B,” 7 p.m.
Pizza party with author:  Break bread at Copperfield’s with this fabulous author as he presents his latest series! When news reports start appearing of a zombie outbreak in Ireland, B’s racist father thinks it’s a joke. But when zombies attack his high school, B is forced on a mad dash through the serpentine corridors, making allegiances with anyone with enough gall to fight off their pursuers. Shan enters the zombie genre in a thoroughly bloody fashion with this slow-burning horror piece, which opens a planned 12-book series.

TUESDAY (2/5)

Terri Nolan, “Burden of Truth,” 7 p.m.
Investigative journalist Birdie Elizabeth Keane would give anything–even her Pulitzer–to see Matt Whelan, the love of her life, one more time. The sudden death of the Los Angeles cop has left her devastated, angry, and baffled. Coming from a traditional Irish-Catholic family of cops, Birdie can’t ignore the bizarre coincidences surrounding his “accidental” death–or her suspicion that he planned it. A twisting trail of clues leads her to a sixteen-year-old murder, a cold case she’s always wanted to solve. With dangerous forces closing in, Birdie races to decipher Matt’s last message for her. Each stunning revelation brings her closer to the dark truth about a man she thought she knew–Was he a dirty cop?–and unimaginable, painful secrets about the people she loves most.

Frosty Hesson, “Making Mavericks: The Memoir of a Surfing Legend,” 7 p.m.
When Richard “Frosty” Hesson was first approached by a young Jay Moriarty in 1990, the skinny kid with a sparkle in his eye only wanted one thing from the icon: his help in becoming a better surfer. Hesson, one of the first to conquer the huge waves off northern California known as Mavericks, recognized that the kid “had a vision.” Jay quickly demonstrated a resolve that reminded Frosty of his younger self, pursuing his goal with a seriousness far beyond his years. His attitude and work ethic earned Frosty’s respect and, eventually, his friendship. Making Mavericks is the inspiring story of their father-son bond and of the challenges that made each of them who they were—surf legends, and the subject of the upcoming film Chasing Mavericks.
