To celebrate their local inception into the GoLocal Coop, Barber Insurance Agency put together a video that parodied the viral video “Gangnam Style” while also paying tribute to the local busineses of Sonoma County. See if you can catch which shops made it into the final cut.
I don’t know, I think this one could definitely hit 1 billion views in a few weeks, right?
This video is only one of many videos the insurance agency will be putting together throughout the year. The series features local businesses in each video, and each month they give out prizes, like iPad minis and gift certificates to local businesses, to winners they announce at the end of the video.
To find out how you can get involved and win great prizes, visit Barber Insurance Agency’s blog at barberinsurance.com.
What a nice surprise! To see this shared in the Press Democrat!

Report comment Report commentYay!! Go Barber Insurance!!!
:-)
I know Bill…how can anyone be happy for such racist company? How can anyone like an insurance company to begin with. They’re in the same league as car salesmen.
Report comment Report commentCorrect me if I’m wrong but an agency is different than a company, no? I don’t really see it as racist unless you think parodying an Asian singer is inherently racist. When does she use an accent? She’s just a goofy white lady trying to rap to the Gangnam beat lol!
Report comment Report commentLOL someone didn’t like my comment huh? Funny the two people that have a problem with the video can’t even type in complete sentences. PD always has trolls waiting to start something out of nothing!
Report comment Report commentCorrect. What I meant is, how can anyone like such a racist agent/agency.
Report comment Report commentOprah and Bill- I don’t get it, she isn’t mocking an accent at all, and for what it’s worth, I’m proud of helping people with insurance, and supporting our local businesses in a fun way. Take care.
Report comment Report commentSounds a bit racist to me. One thing is to do a video on the dance, another is to mock the accent. For what it’s worth, I’m Asian and I find the video insulting.
Report comment Report commentThe comments claiming racism surprise me. I don’t see her making fun of Asian culture, or even of the video this was copied from. And beyond that, the original song is done by an Asian artist. If the original song were done by a British artist, she would probably be imitating a British accent. If anything, this is simply an homage to the original video to help promote local businesses.
Now her hair on the other hand…. Just kidding.
Lighten up, people.
I think she has great spirit and is out to support the community and to also bring a smile to many faces. What are you doing for the community?
I give this a thumbs up. I do not think this person is behaving in a rude way at all and the word “racist” is a very very strong word. Try and not throw it around so easily.
Report comment Report commentHow on earth does anyone see that as racist? You all need your heads examined and get out a bit more to see some real racism. Seriously? Does everything have to turn into an issue about race, class, social standing, political affiliation? Very sad what our country is coming to. It’s about shopping LOCAL! Not at Walmart loading up your cart with a bunch of crap made in China or Indonesia. Do you shop local? Kudos Barber Insurance group for getting involved in Golocal.
Report comment Report commentOprah, Bill & John – Seriously? google Barber Insurance and see the other videos produced. I’ve known this person for nearly 40 years – she is far from racist! Pure nonsense. Kudos Barber Insurance for promoting local businesses!! The world could do with a few more Cheryls!! Keep it goin – love your spirit!!! xx
Report comment Report commentPulling the race card is so 2012… This business couldn’t be anymore involved in the community than they are now. They are down to earth, family oriented and just all around great people. They have lent out their business parking lot for fundraisers for soccer teams. They sponsor youth basketball, baseball and soccer teams. They raise money for different charities like breast cancer. They donate
Thanksgiving and Christmas turkeys. They participate in KZSTs secret Santa. This past Christmas they made Christmas cards and went caroling at Apple Valley Reahbilitation center with their families. They have been known to ralley together funds for their clients when they have had house fires or been displaced from their homes. To accuse them of something so disgusting as being racist is just ridiculous.
This is brilliant! If you can ignore the internet trolls’ false cries of “racism”, and look at what’s really going on, you will see a vibrant local business community being creative and fun, whilst reaching out to it’s customer in a way that the global monopolies can not. Kudos to Barber, Go Local, and Ro-ro. Keep on rocking!
Report comment Report commentAs a personal acquaintance of the woman in this video, I can attest to what an amazing individual she is. She is the kind of person we all want in our corner. She rallies for friends when they need are in need and stands by her clients in times of crisis. I have personally seen her lead fundraisers, coordinate meals when people need them most, and create videos (of the same amazing caliber) to encourage friends in the fight against breast cancer. Way to go Barber Insurance for promoting local businesses and for having your superstar be someone we all can look up to.
Report comment Report commentBarber Insurance is the epitome of what we hope to see in all our local businesses. What a group of wonderfully kind, considerate and locally conscious business people. I love their monthly drawings and excitedly look forward to and watch each music video over and over laughing historically at what these fun ladies create! Barber Insurance goes above and beyond for the people in our community and having personally been the recipient of their philanthropy, I will forever be their biggest fan!
Oh yeah AND RoRo rocks it! Go get it, sistah!
Report comment Report commentAwesome!
Report comment Report commentWow so much love and support from our community, you all scared Oprah and John away! Thanks everyone. RoRo thanks you too! Now we can start cooking up our next video!
Report comment Report commentWhile its great to see local businesses having fun, I am a local business owner myself- I have to say I am disgusted that Americans are continuing to do anything whatsoever that supports Psy, who is extremely Anti-American! We are idiots for not banning his music and instead make him millions of dollars when he clearly hates Americans! People should watch and/or listen to his video/song “Dear American” where he states “kill all them Yankees. Kill them all painfully and slowly. Kill their mothers, daughters, mother-in laws and fathers”. Now I personally don’t care if it was an emotional time for him and he apologized now that his dirty laundry was aired- and only then by the way. His words are considered the same as terrorist threatsand are completely anti- American and he shouldn’t benefit in any way, shape or form from us. Lets pick a song to have fun with that’s by an artist proud to be an American, not one wishing we were dead!! Sorry-
Report comment Report commentThe people above that describe this video as being racist have absolutely no sense of humor. You guys are just trying to create issues. This video is hilarious and to say she is “mocking” an asian accent is ridiculous because she is simply attempting to copy it and I think she does a pretty good job. If you have a problem with this video you should try harder to get a sense of humor, you’d be more likeable. Keep rocking it RoRo!
P.S. I’m asian and if I impersonated a white singer, no one would call me racist.
Report comment Report commentI also like how “Oprah” says no one could ever like an insurance company employee or a car salesman. Hating entire groups of people based on their occupation…such a moral idea!
Report comment Report commentAfter watching this video, I can see why there’s some controversy. “Need to wash my Toyota”. She could have mentioned any other car. Why a Toyota? Asians are constantly stereotyped for driving Toyotas, and this video clearly stereotypes.
I also noticed how the speech of this character is very “choppy”, and the use of incomplete sentences. “Change yo hair” & “discount there” are good examples of that. Tell me that’s not racist, or stereotyping. While some Asians do speak that way, not all do.
What about the facial expressions used, particularly her mouth, while speaking.
Please be more careful when creating videos involving race.
I’m surprised, though,that the video wasn’t named “Locol Sty-O”.
Report comment Report commentReally? Toyota is obviously used to rhyme with mocha. You’re taking “change your hair” from the sentence “Need some beauty care? A place in town where they can change your hair” and “discount there” comes from “If you buy local you can get a discount there.” The sentences are “chopped” according to the beat, which is a pretty common convention in rapping and parodies… Her facial expressions are goofy, but if you watch any other videos, she tends to be goofy. It sounds like a lot of people are projecting their own stereotypes onto the video and reading into it. “Locol Sty-O” is a lot more weird and racist than anything in the actual video… Just because Toyota is a Japanese company it can no longer be mentioned without being racist? Now Barber is simultaneously anti-American and racist against Asians? This is absurd.
Report comment Report commentParody: an imitation of the style of a particular writer, artist, or genre with deliberate exaggeration for comic effect
Report comment Report commentI’m sorry but Toyota does NOT rhyme with mocha. “Discount there” to rhyme with hair? It sounds more like she tried to rhyme “discount they-ah” with “hay-ah”. I agree with the video being a little racist and anti American too.
Report comment Report commentAlso the Karate scene was uncalled for. It brings back childhood memories. Since I was the only asian in school, I would always be asked if I knew Karate.
Report comment Report comment^^^On her Kung Fu video
Report comment Report commentRoRo, you should make a video of how bad Asian drivers are. It’s been proven
Report comment Report commentToyota rhymes with MOCHA!!! To be clear all races drives Toyotas as much as they drive Fords, BMWs Audis, Hondas. It’s presumptuous to think that she chose a Toyota due to race when clearly she chose the car to rhyme with her theme-LOCAL BUSINESSES!
Her lips? Her slang? She’s in character! The SAME character as when she performed her other videos, it’s fun, funny and NOT derived from any particular race!
People so concerned with pointing out our differences are missing the common threads that go beyond race lines, our SENSE OF HUMOR!
Report comment Report commentI enjoyed this! I live and shop locally. I didn’t notice anything out of line at all, in fact, I laughed out loud! Some people find something to #*€^= about no matter what, what a drag… Good job guys, yay Sonoma county!
Report comment Report commentLmao Anne you HAVE to be a troll. Only Asian in class and asked if you knew karate? Lolol. Flashbacks. Haha. And you must not listen to rap music or have ever even heard a rap. “Use of incomplete sentences” comedy. Jill you must be white and never listened to rap either.
Report comment Report commentIf you knew anything about this woman then you would know she does not have a racist or uncaring bone in her body. She is a truly amazing individual that is dedicated to helping others.
And unless my memory fails me, I’m pretty sure she is a brown or black belt in martial arts, so it’s really not “uncalled for”.
Have any of you seen the staggering number of parodies this song has? I personally want to gouge my ears every time I hear it, but this video is in no way racist. I hate Psy and I think people really need to open their eyes about what he stands for, but translating that racism to someone trying to help their local economy is just petty and ridiculous.
Grow up people.
Report comment Report commentDoes that make every person that mentions Toyota a racist? What about Hyundai? Honda? Suzuki? Nissan? Maybe she drives a Toyota. Or maybe it worked the best for rhyming purposes.
Get a sense of humor, tightwad.
Report comment Report commentI love everything about Barber; from the incredible, caring people, to how much they genuinely care about others.
Anyone that thinks this is racist needs to pull their head out of their ass and go look at some TRUE racism that still exists in our country.
A local business making a silly video is most definitely not racist.
Report comment Report commentWow! I am stunned at how people can see one video of someone promoting buy Local and can be so judge mental! Anti-American, that is harsh! Flashbacks to your childhood?? Seriously!!! Stop looking for the negative, find a sense of humor. It makes life a lot more fun! This was a light hearted funny video from a woman with the biggest heart! I am beyond proud to call her a friend. Take it for what it is, Buy Local it’s as simple as that.
Report comment Report commentI’m a Democrat with blaxican children thank you very much. (And a sense of humor obviously what you haters lack) Republican. Psh. I’m so offended.
Report comment Report commentJust for the record, my comment is in no way, shape or form against Barber Insurance or their ethics, the video is “funny”
And with a message to “buy local”- excellent, i agree. My message is simply that we need to stop mocking or supporting Anti-American musicians/artists. Use a song more proud to be American rather than continue to popularize an Anti-American musicians and financially reward him for wishing us dead- we are kinda dumb allowing this! I remember back in the day a rap band Too Live Crew and Too Short being banned in some locations due to their lyrics. Which of course were without a doubt offensive towards women- Yes they were explicit but were Americans and certainly were not talking about killing us- I just don’t get how he gets off being rewarded financially for his hatred while other tax paying Americans were banned…… The system? Yeah……..ok
Amen to that^^^
