Santaland Diaries: The experience of being a holiday elf in Santaland at Macy’s left such a memorable effect on humorist David Sedaris, he wrote a career changing essay that was later adapted into a play by Joe Mantello. The result is hilarious mostly true adaptation of Sedaris’ elfen days, performed at Spreckels Performing Arts Center, starring David Yen. $20-$24. Oleander: The Sacramento band enjoyed a brief taste of success in the late 90s with their hit singles “Why I’m Here” and “I Walk Alone”. Now they’re back after an extended hiatus, re-entering the music scene with a tour that stops off at Last Day Saloon. Railroad Square Merchant Open House: The whole area of historic Railroad Square will be decorated to the holiday nines for their annual open house. Of note is the windows of the different shops, the impressive lobby of Hotel La Rose, and free horse drawn carriage rides (as they do every weekend). Participating shops will also have refreshments. Thanks for the heads up! I’m bringing my GF to Santa Rosa from San Jose for Sat, Dec 1st for her B Day. I was planning her to take her to Safari West…but they might be rained out for the day! Can you recommend things to do? What to check out? Where to eat?

Eric, you can continue your route from Safari West and go over the hill to Calistoga. http://calistogaspa.com/ has day rates available, choose from three pools with varying temp’s. Day use 10-6 I think maybe til 8. Go to their website. Last time we were there it was $25 per person. FOr eats got to Calistoga Inn, they even make beer!

Visitors come from all over the county and beyond to tour the modified Greek revival home decorated for the holidays in Victorian style. During a tour of the Home, costumed Docents tell about the “plant wizard” and his life’s work improving plants we know today.
