Huey Lewis and the News kicks off the fall musical lineup with a concert at Rodney Strong Vineyards this Saturday.

You can almost hear the calendar pages turning as we stand on the edge of summer and peer into a fall musical lineup that signals back to school, back to the clubs and back to concert halls after a season of sun-splashed festivals.

Not that everything goes indoors immediately. There’s still time for a river festival in the waning days of September. Or an outdoor winery gig before harvest gets underway.

But there is change on the horizon. Just when you thought the Harmony Festival had faded away, it rises from the Sonoma County Fairgrounds and reinvents itself as Harmony by the Bay at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View. A rock-star Chinese concert pianist is set to launch the $120-million Green Music Center at Sonoma State University. And an 1880s resort in Lake County tries to fill the void left behind by the closed Konocti Harbor music venue.

Bringing you the best in old cowgirls, young Biebers and ageless bluesmen, here’s a look at the 2012 fall musical highlights:

September

Sept. 1 — Huey Lewis: Still looking for that “new drug,” the sporty old golfer from Marin has a way of staying relevant to the ladies and the classics with recent ventures into the Stax Record soul catalog.
$75-$115. Rodney Strong Summer Concert Series. 11455, Old Redwood Highway, Healdsburg. www.rodneystrong.com.

Sept. 14 — Cobb Mountain Days: Tommy Castro and Lydia Pense headline this two-day festival in the Lake County woods at the recently renovated Hoberg’s Club Resort, where Tommy Dorsey and Xavier Cugat once played and Beatles adviser Maharishi Mahesh Yogi once ran a spiritual compound.
$20-$25. Highway 175 at Entrance Road, Cobb. www.hobergsclub.com/concerts-festivals.

Sept. 19 — Trombone Shorty: The New Orleans native has collaborated with everyone from the Neville Brothers to Kid Rock. Known for his blistering live sets, he brings the spirit of the French Quarter to Santa Rosa.
$30-$45. Wells Fargo Center, 50 Mark West Springs Road, Santa Rosa. www.wellsfargocenterarts.org.
