This weekend, set aside time to get to know your neighbors. On Sunday, July 29th, from 12-4pm, Santa Rosa’s Downtown Courthouse Square will be teeming with people for the Festival of Neighborhoods – a free all-city block party. The purpose? To bring the neighborhoods of Santa Rosa together to inspire a sense of community and pride in where we live, and to lead towards resources to make our community even better.
The event is put together by the City of Santa Rosa’s Community Engagement Program, a group who focuses on building neighborhood coalitions by cleaning up parks, planting gardens, and finding new and innovative ways to bring neighbors closer together.
Ride your bike to the Festival of Neighborhoods and park it for free with the Bike Valet. The square will hold different booths with both recreation and information. Live music will be played by bands Hot Club Beelzebub and Church. Kids can enjoy fun activities like origami, face painting, stamping, and henna tattoos. Food vendors will include Guerilla Foods, Fiesta Party Beto, and corner favorite Ralph’s Courthouse Classics. Discover resources for recreation programs, emergency preparedness, and more. And above all, check out the neighborhood booths to meet and share ideas for your own community.

Do not try this in Petaluma, especially on the west side. We have lived in our neighborhood for over 50 years, and have seen people grow up, move out, and new people move in. However, in the past 15 years the ‘new’ people that have moved in are very snobbish and stand offish. They have this attitude of superiority over us older folks, and try to control us. Some have gone so far as to prevent visitors from parking in front of their homes when visiting us. It’s a public street, not theirs!
Many Petaluma neighborhoods have turned into this, ‘let’s get the old out and take over.’ To them I say, make your move, we’re NOT leaving!
