A finger-fueled wildfire of whiskey jugs and rowdy jigs, The Brothers Comatose is a band with a scruffy outfit and a cavalcade of strings. Formed out of the late night hootenannies in a San Francisco living room, the quintet of bluegrass players carry on a brotherly rapport with audiences and a “sing along, drink along” style at every show.

The Brothers keep to a classic bluegrass sound with a full set of originals and a few classic covers on mandolin, banjo, guitar, fiddle and standup bass. On vocals, bassist Gio Benedetti, guitarist Ben Morrison and his brother, banjoist Alex Morrison, serenade fans with a blend of folksy lyrics and good, old-fashioned country blues charm. With an added touch of the indie music scene in its bloodstream, the group offers audiences a foot-stompin’, knee-slappin’ live show in the musical vein of Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys and the David Grisman Quintet.

The Comatose Brothers can be found performing venues and nightclubs from Santa Rosa to Santa Cruz. Claiming its red, ’88 Chevy G20 tour van as a sixth band mate, the quintet has grown a passion for big tours and national blues festivals, and has shared the stage with a slew of performers including The Devil Makes Three and Justin Townes Earle. Currently, the Brothers are recording its second album set to release in spring 2012. - Michael Shufro
